Curriculum
Each week the elementary school girls involved in Strong Women, Strong Girls work with their mentors on one of the Strong Women, Strong Girls curriculum activities. These activities are designed to provide the elementary school-age girls involved in the program with the skills they need to build and maintain high levels of self-esteem and to achieve future success. To do this, each of the curriculum activities addresses one of the program's ten "Countdown to Success" goals. Additionally, each week the girls study a contemporary or historic female role model who exemplifies the Countdown to Success goal they are addressing that week.
At the conclusion of the program's curriculum activities, the Strong Women, Strong Girls volunteer mentors work with the girls in their groups to create six-week service learning projects. These service learning projects are designed to engage the girls as change-agents in their communities and to teach them the community problem solving process. Past service projects have included organizing a school-wide food drive, creating gift baskets donated to the Bridge Over Troubled Waters shelter, and creating women's history wall tiles that were installed at the school site.
All of the Strong Women, Strong Girls curriculum activities are referenced to the the "Eleven Principles for Effective Character Education" set forth by the Character Education Partnership and to state educational frameworks.
